With AirPods, Apple simplifies the bluetooth accessory grip process. When
the device detects a bluetooth accessory, its image will appear on the
screen and the user should only press the icon for automatic pegs. Use of the Apple W1 chip is required to use this system. Google yesterday introduced Fast Pair with the same functionality.
Fast Pair only requires devices that support Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) and accessories that are registered with Google. Fast Pair will detect the presence of bluetooth accessories and then look for it in the retention of registered device data. The accessory image will appear on the device and the user should only press the icon once for automatic pegs.
Currently only Google Pixel Buds and Libratone's Q Adapt On-Ear are supported. The best thing about Fast Pair is that the device only needs to be updated using Google Play Services 11.7+ to enjoy it. This means it supports Android devices 6.0 and above with no special chip requirements like Apple W1.
