Today, there are a lot of biometric based recognition methods used on smartphones - including scanning finger and scanning eyes and faces. Most recently, Samsung also patented a new recognition method for a user, namely by scanning the palm.
However, the purpose of scanning the palms is different than usual. Samsung patents this method more to recover lost passwords - and once scanned with the camera on the device, it will show a sign for your password.

Since some say the lines on the palms are different for everyone - besides it may be a bit strange for someone to capture a hand-painted picture, then it's probably one of the fun ways to remind you of the forgotten password.
