Last year we commented on an iPhone X and realized a problem when pictures from the phone were downloaded to a Windows computer in the office. All the images taken are in HEIF format (High Efficiency Image File Format) which replaces the JPEG format as the preferred format since the introduction of iOS 11.
Special programs like CopyTrans HEIC are forced to download for converting HEIF files to JPEG because Windows 10 does not support the display of this new format. Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 17123 was just given yesterday and it brought native HEIF support. Build 17123 will only support display of pictures only. User can still not edit it.
For Windows 10 users, this HEIF support is expected to be provided along with the Redstone 4 Spring Creators Update this April. This HEIF support is present at the right time as it is already supported on iOS 11, High Sierra macOS and Android P.
